How to Win Scavenge

December 20th, 2009

We noticed a great guide for Scavenge on the official forums that you might be interested to see. These tips, courtesy of noisy_, may help even an experienced player to get the most out of the Scavenge experience. Reproduced with permission.

The Golden Rules

  • Communicate goals and status via mic early and often. Remember that leadership is earned and not demanded. Ask your teammates what they want to do. Volunteer to cover them as they run for cans. Get them involved. Gain their trust.
  • Maximize your odds. Jump survivors with cans at point blank. Attack with double the number of infected. Send redundant rescuers to disabled survivors. Never attack all four survivors at once unless it’s to serve as a distraction while someone gets pulled/charged/etc.
  • Be likable. I know this will be hard for some of you to grasp, but if you act like a jerk, you’re just another sad little person whose parents beat them a little too much. You’re not funny, aggravating, or interesting. You’re played out. Encourage your teammates when they mess up or hit a rough spot. Practice good sportsmanship. Thank the other team for the game. Do you taunt ragequitters? Guess what? They’re probably quitting because you’re unlikable and they don’t want to waste another minute of their life in your company, not because of any personal defect of their own. Read more…

Dead Center Finale = Scavenge

November 5th, 2009

As predicted, the Dead Center finale involves finding gas cans to fuel the Plymouth Superbird found in the mall in a similar manner to Scavenge Mode. Recently released gameplay pictures reveal that Survivors must fuel the car with 13 gas cans scattered around the food court of the Liberty Mall. The Superbird purportedly belonged to Jimmy Gibbs, Jr, a famous auto racer with four “Super Cup” wins.

Savannah seems to be infatuated with the racer, since his mug can be seen everywhere from the mall food court to roadside billboards. A mall map reveals that the Survivors start on the opposite side of the mall from the car and make their way inside, which isn’t too surprising.

At one point in the campaign, Survivors must deliver soda to the owner of Whitaker’s Gun Shop before he will open the door. We’re not sure what will attract the horde in this case. Perhaps an evanescent whiff of effervescent indulgence?

We’ve noticed three other things from these gameplay shots: first, one of the crescendos involves opening the door to a “Save 4 Less”, which probably triggers an alarm.

Second, it’s very likely that the CEDA hazmat suit UCI have been moved to DC, based on the large amount of CEDA equipment lying about.

Thirdly, ammo packs will almost definitely be deployable as caches for special ammo types. Here, Ellis is carrying an ammo pack with explosive ammo.

EDIT: These images have been removed from their original site. I’m adding a gallery:

New Game Mode Revealed: Scavenge!

October 11th, 2009

After months of rampant speculation, the new game mode has been revealed. Scavenge is like fast food for the Infected—it’s designed to sate those who want their carnage fast and dirty. In Scavenge, the Survivor team’s goal is to collect sixteen gas cans that have been scattered about the level. The Infected team’s goal is, of course, to make their lives an epic maelstrom of perilous, blood-curdling horror.

Scavenge is played as a set of three rounds; within each round, each team plays both sides once. The Survivors begin in the center of the map. After someone leaves the area (or after 45 seconds), the round begins, and the Survivors have 120 seconds to run around collecting gas cans in order to fill an objective at the middle of the starting area. Every time gas is added, the Survivor team gains 20 seconds and a point.

The round ends when time has run out or the Survivors have been wiped out. If a Survivor is holding a gas can when time runs out, the game enters overtime, which ends as soon as no Survivors are holding gas cans. After all three rounds, the team with the most total points wins. In case of a tie, the team with the shortest time played wins.

There has already been some concern about the balance of the new game mode. Some have commented that because the central objective is so important, it’s far too easy to camp the Survivors. Also, dropped fuel cans are vulnerable to gunfire and Spitter goo, making the Spitter extremely powerful. We don’t know if Valve will address these concerns.

At launch, six maps will be available; each is a modified map from one of the campaigns. In Motel (Dark Carnival), Survivors must fill a generator in the middle. In the map from Dead Center, they have to fill up a Plymouth Superbird. Details about other maps have not yet been revealed.
