Left 4 Dead 2 DLC: The Passing

December 14th, 2009

Valve has just announced the first DLC addon for Left 4 Dead 2, “The Passing”. The new DLC, set to be released in early spring 2010 for the PC and Xbox 360, will include a “huge offering” of gameplay content, including a new cooperative campaign and narrative; new Survival, Versus, and Scavenge maps; a new Uncommon Common Infected; and a new melee weapon and firearm. Oh, and there’s one more thing…

The Left 4 Dead Survivors will be in it!

You heard us right! After months of speculation on Valve’s promised “ode” to the original Survivors, the studio has decided to call all the Survivors together in one campaign.

The story will be set just after Dead Center, in a small town in rural Georgia. Players will take the role of the L4D2 Survivors when they encounter and interact with the original ones. So, if you’ve been missing your favorite eye candy, pill-pilferer, geriatric gunman, or leather-clad misomaniac, this spring, Valve has just the right medicine for you.

The developers also mention that there will be a brand-spanking-new cooperative “challenge mode” of play. We don’t have any specifics on what this new game mode might be. It could be another difficult campaign-style mode, like Realism, or it could be a competitive game mode that pits two teams of Survivors against each other, much like some on the official forums have been suggesting for months. The latter theory seems particularly plausible, considering that both groups of Survivors will be in it.

We should also mention that this should settle the debates about whether or not the original Survivors died at Last Stand (and thus about its canonicality).

Custom Weapons in L4D2

December 5th, 2009

Some folks down at FPSBanana have come up with a way for modders to create custom melee weapons for Left 4 Dead 2! The new weapons can use custom models, though the author notes that there are some caveats involved.

The melee weapons have no effect on normal online play, but they might be an interesting addition to your next locally hosted or offline game.

Left 4 Dead Maps In L4D2?

November 22nd, 2009

According to some folks in the L4DMods forums, some community developers have found a way to port the Left 4 Dead 1 campaigns (including Crash Course) to L4D2! Including the maps (and perhaps Survivors) from Left 4 Dead 1 was one of the possibilities that players were most excited to hear from Valve, but so far, we haven’t heard anything official about this possibility since about a week after E3.

For those who are excited at the possibility of integration between the two games, this is as good as you’re going to get for now. The modification allows you to play as the new Survivors in the old maps, with the new Infected. However, there are still a number of bugs. For instance, the baseball bat is the only new weapon that can spawn, though the tonfa and Bile bomb are dropped by UCI. Also, players have been complaining about a lot of lag and crashes, especially in crescendos and finales. Most of the finales will crash before completion.

In order to use this mod legally, you have to own both L4D and L4D2 on the PC. You should also have some experience modding your game files, and should create a full backup before proceeding. Otherwise, enjoy!

A Helping Hand

October 26th, 2009

Hey everyone! I’m Sandy, and I’m here to help out Elunah with the site, since he will be a bit busy for a while. You will probably hear from him still, but I’ll post a few things here and there to try and help him out for now!

Here’s a video of Hard Rain and some chainsaw gameplay. Enjoy if you haven’t seen it!

Penny Arcade Expo ‘09 Updates!

September 12th, 2009

The Left 4 Dead 2 Info page has just been updated with all the juicy new information that came out of PAX this year in Seattle! We strongly recommend that you read the page and look for update tags, but here’s the quick synopsis:

The Jockey jumps around and hops on Survivors’ backs, actually controlling their movements. This allows him to steer them into sticky situations. Survivors who are snagged by the Jockey lose most of their control over their movements, but they are able to steer very slightly. The Jockey has a telltale snicker and makes a maniacal laughing sound when controlling players.

The Spitter has undergone a major facelift. Or…rather, her face now looks like it was slammed into some burning-hot asphalt made out of lava and then wrung through a hyperactive Van De Graaff generator. The look of her spit itself and the AOE it causes has changed. Also, she now drools. Lovely!

In other Special Infected news, the poor Tank is now bald.

The festive shoes of the Zombie Clown attract other Infected, potentially causing minor hordes frequently. There may be an achievement for honking his nose.

Electric guitars, crowbars, machetes, and police batons have been either seen or reported. The wooden baseball bat also made its first appearance. The bat is available in the pre-order demo, but players who don’t pre-order can unlock the bat when they play with pre-ordering players. Melee weapons now replace pistols in their slot when picked up. Originally, they were held like large explosives.

In addition, the Desert Eagle has been added as an alternative to the standard pistols. The Deagle has a 8-round capacity but cannot be dual-wielded. It replaces the standard pistols in their slot, and can be fitted with a laser sight.

Campaign II: Dark Carnival

After fleeing Savannah in the first campaign, Survivors hit a traffic jam and are forced to leave the highway. They reach a two-story motel, then make their way to the Whispering Oaks amusement park, where nefarious thrills await. See videos. ▼

The first chapter begins on the highway and encompasses the motel and the path to the fairgrounds. The second chapter, aptly titled “The Fairgrounds,” begins in a small shed outside the main entrance. The early areas of the fairgrounds include concessions like hot dogs and other food stands. Later on, Survivors will make their way through a number of courtyards, and then slide down from the top of a giant slide.

Later, Survivors will encounter a carousel, where the second chapter’s crescendo occurs. Survivors must activate a switch that turns on the carousel and opens a gate on the far side of the carousel. They must then fight through the ocean of undead to turn off the merry-go-round and stop the onslaught. From there, Survivors must travel a short distance to a lover’s lane, where the saferoom awaits.

The remaining chapters have not been released, but Dark Carnival is likely a 5-chapter campaign. The outline of a ferris wheel suggests that one may be included. Chet has said that the crescendo has something to do with the electric guitars added very recently, so we believe that it may have something to do with a stage or other performance venue. In the final build, the fairgrounds will include playable parlour games (mini-games). For instance, Chet hints that there may be a shooting gallery that has an associated achievement.

Swamp Fever: New Videos and Images!

July 23rd, 2009

It’s an exciting day as bloggers and fans alike get more chances to look at Swamp Fever at Comic-Con 2009 in San Diego. The most exciting new media we’ve seen so far are three short clips from 1up’s Game Videos, along with one clip from GameTrailers. These clips reveal quite a bit of new information about Valve’s new game.

Show embedded! ▼

Valve has also seen fit to release the poster art for Swamp Fever! The tagline will be “The only cure is dying.” Not particularly inspired, if you ask us. We’d rather have something a bit more catchy…and maybe cowbelly.

The famed AK-47 is visible in the gameplay videos, strongly suggesting it will be included. Kalashnikov would be proud! The new weapon, which has a clip size of 40 rounds instead of the traditional AR’s 50, will likely be more powerful, due to its higher caliber. This same video also gives us an in-game look at the cricket bat for the first time. And no, people, it’s not an oar. Have you ever seen an oar?

According to ShackNews, a grenade launcher has made the cut for the final product’s 20+ items. We’re hoping for more information soon.

Coach’s appearance has changed slightly. In previous videos and in both campaign posters, he wears a yellow and light blue shirt, but in the new footage, he’s wearing a purple and gold shirt.

Show GameTrailers video. ▼

Thanks to the GameTrailers video above, we’ve also gotten a better look at the Spitter, though there are still no good gameplay images of her. The official image, released recently, disturbs us completely. Don’t look at it if you want to sleep tonight. We get a better look at the cloud she creates, which appears to change colors over time, possibly corresponding to an increase in damage rate. The GameTrailers video embedded above shows that an obscene amount of damage can result from the cloud under the right circumstances.

The video also shows us more about the Charger, as well. It’s possible that the Charger can hit Survivors long distances, though we’re surprised it would be able to knock anyone as far as Nick flew in the video. The Charger appears to do 10 damage on its first slam, but then 15 damage on its second! This suggests that the damage it can do increases with each sequential attack.

We’ll be updating the info page soon, and bringing you more details as they become available.

New L4D2 Melee Weapon!

July 7th, 2009

A new melee weapon has been announced for Left 4 Dead 2! According to IGN, the fifth released melee weapon will be a cricket bat. People in many forums have guessed (or wished for) the addition of this weapon. This should help satisfy some of the Shaun of the Dead fans and European zombicidal maniacs out there.

So, here are our guesses for the last five melee weapons: police baton, golf club, some type of sword (katana, kthx), hockey stick, and finally, Gordon’s beloved crowbar—probably hidden, unannounced, in the bowels of some unknown campaign!

Edit: It has been around 24 hours since this article popped up on IGN, and so far, there have been no other independent sources confirming it. It could be a big prank pulled by the folks at IGN to commemorate The Ashes, an internationally renowned Test cricket series between England and Australia. We’ll have to wait and see.
