Left 4 Dead Maps In L4D2?

November 22nd, 2009

According to some folks in the L4DMods forums, some community developers have found a way to port the Left 4 Dead 1 campaigns (including Crash Course) to L4D2! Including the maps (and perhaps Survivors) from Left 4 Dead 1 was one of the possibilities that players were most excited to hear from Valve, but so far, we haven’t heard anything official about this possibility since about a week after E3.

For those who are excited at the possibility of integration between the two games, this is as good as you’re going to get for now. The modification allows you to play as the new Survivors in the old maps, with the new Infected. However, there are still a number of bugs. For instance, the baseball bat is the only new weapon that can spawn, though the tonfa and Bile bomb are dropped by UCI. Also, players have been complaining about a lot of lag and crashes, especially in crescendos and finales. Most of the finales will crash before completion.

In order to use this mod legally, you have to own both L4D and L4D2 on the PC. You should also have some experience modding your game files, and should create a full backup before proceeding. Otherwise, enjoy!

New Achievements Unveiled!

October 12th, 2009

The new achievements that will ship with Left 4 Dead 2 have been unveiled!

Xbox360Achievements.org has just posted a list of fifty X360 achievements, including numerous ones that had been previously speculated. For instance, “CL0WND” (a play on one of the previous games’ achievements) requires Survivors to honk a clown’s nose. To achieve “Scattering Ram,” a human-controlled Charger must hit all four Survivors in one rush.

We can’t be sure if the XBox 360 achievements will match the Steam achievements, but it’s likely at least most will be the same. Check out a list of achievements below!

PRICE CHOPPER
Survive the Dead Center campaign.
MIDNIGHT RIDER
Survive the Dark Carnival campaign.
RAGIN’ CAJUN
Survive the Swamp Fever campaign.
WEATHERMAN
Survive the Hard Rain campaign.
BRIDGE BURNER
Survive the Parish campaign.

October 11th, 2009

Is Expert difficulty unable to sate your zombicidal mania? Take a whack at Realism mode. Our ever-vigilant comrades at 1Up spotted a menu offering this mode in one of the demos. Chet described it as “a special modifier” designed for those who yawn in the face of the zombocalypse. Keep an eye out for more info soon.

Penny Arcade Expo ‘09 Updates!

September 12th, 2009

The Left 4 Dead 2 Info page has just been updated with all the juicy new information that came out of PAX this year in Seattle! We strongly recommend that you read the page and look for update tags, but here’s the quick synopsis:

The Jockey jumps around and hops on Survivors’ backs, actually controlling their movements. This allows him to steer them into sticky situations. Survivors who are snagged by the Jockey lose most of their control over their movements, but they are able to steer very slightly. The Jockey has a telltale snicker and makes a maniacal laughing sound when controlling players.

The Spitter has undergone a major facelift. Or…rather, her face now looks like it was slammed into some burning-hot asphalt made out of lava and then wrung through a hyperactive Van De Graaff generator. The look of her spit itself and the AOE it causes has changed. Also, she now drools. Lovely!

In other Special Infected news, the poor Tank is now bald.

The festive shoes of the Zombie Clown attract other Infected, potentially causing minor hordes frequently. There may be an achievement for honking his nose.

Electric guitars, crowbars, machetes, and police batons have been either seen or reported. The wooden baseball bat also made its first appearance. The bat is available in the pre-order demo, but players who don’t pre-order can unlock the bat when they play with pre-ordering players. Melee weapons now replace pistols in their slot when picked up. Originally, they were held like large explosives.

In addition, the Desert Eagle has been added as an alternative to the standard pistols. The Deagle has a 8-round capacity but cannot be dual-wielded. It replaces the standard pistols in their slot, and can be fitted with a laser sight.

Campaign II: Dark Carnival

After fleeing Savannah in the first campaign, Survivors hit a traffic jam and are forced to leave the highway. They reach a two-story motel, then make their way to the Whispering Oaks amusement park, where nefarious thrills await. See videos. ▼

The first chapter begins on the highway and encompasses the motel and the path to the fairgrounds. The second chapter, aptly titled “The Fairgrounds,” begins in a small shed outside the main entrance. The early areas of the fairgrounds include concessions like hot dogs and other food stands. Later on, Survivors will make their way through a number of courtyards, and then slide down from the top of a giant slide.

Later, Survivors will encounter a carousel, where the second chapter’s crescendo occurs. Survivors must activate a switch that turns on the carousel and opens a gate on the far side of the carousel. They must then fight through the ocean of undead to turn off the merry-go-round and stop the onslaught. From there, Survivors must travel a short distance to a lover’s lane, where the saferoom awaits.

The remaining chapters have not been released, but Dark Carnival is likely a 5-chapter campaign. The outline of a ferris wheel suggests that one may be included. Chet has said that the crescendo has something to do with the electric guitars added very recently, so we believe that it may have something to do with a stage or other performance venue. In the final build, the fairgrounds will include playable parlour games (mini-games). For instance, Chet hints that there may be a shooting gallery that has an associated achievement.

W…Wilbur?

September 2nd, 2009

One of Destructoid’s sources has leaked a new Special Infected, which will be galloping onto the scene at this week’s Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle. The new SI, potentially called The Jockey, is a miniature Infected that has a very distinct laugh and moves around by jumping, much like an overgrown, undead rabbit.

The Jockey can attach himself to a Survivor, clawing at his back and actually controlling their movements—potentially leading them off cliffs, into Witches, back to their in-laws, etc. When players are disabled by the Jockey, they are unable to control their characters at all. You can read more about the Jockey at the Official Forums, as well.

Even More About “Crash Course”

August 18th, 2009

Destructoid recently visited Valve to check out more about the upcoming DLC for Left 4 Dead, Crash Course. The preview includes a large number of spoilers, so I won’t include a synopsis here, but if you want to read the juicy, hot-off-the-compiler info, you should surf on over there and have a look.

The Destructoid staff was definitely impressed with the campaign, particularly with how well-suited it was to Versus play. Hunter connoisseurs will be happy to know that there are plenty of death-defying drops and curve-worthy building facades to play around on. As mentioned previously, there will be some sort of artillery that is used to clear the way during the crescendo of the first chapter. The second chapter crescendo sounds even more exciting, but we’d like to give you a chance to experience its thrills first-hand.

Destructoid also gave us a look at the poster art. Apparently, Zoey has improved from Guy Fawkes to be a bit of a Angelina Jolie-Uma Thurman hybrid.

Thanks to GunRabbit for the link.

Welcome to Six Frags

August 17th, 2009

GameTrailers TV visited Valve, revealing the second campaign for the first time. This heretofore unnamed campaign will be set in the Whispering Oaks amusement park in the late evening. After fleeing Savannah in the first campaign, the Survivors hit a traffic jam and have to head off the highway. Once they enter the amusement park, they find that some rides (like the merry-go-round) and other areas are still operating.

We don’t know much else about the campaign, or even if the entire campaign occurs in the amusement park. The amusement park does not appear to have roller coasters, but does have a ferris wheel, hot dog stand, small food court, and other areas.

Chet says that the campaign is so new that there is no current title or tagline for it yet. Let’s hear your ideas and suggestions!
