Left 4 Dead 1 & 2 Update

December 18th, 2009

Valve has released a new update for Left 4 Dead. The update primarily includes fixes for versus matchmaking. One notable change is that lobbies that are more full are preferred over ones that are emptier, potentially allowing lobbies to fill more efficiently.

Updates to Left 4 Dead have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The major changes include:

Left 4 Dead

  • Teams that prefer listen servers will no longer be matched with teams that prefer dedicated servers
  • Official dedicated servers are now preferred when searching for team matches
  • More populous lobbies are now preferred over less populous ones when searching for games
  • Players who crash or have failed to load are no longer banned if they have been kicked
  • Fixed exploit allowing players to end games prematurely using the ‘outtro_stats_done’ console command
  • Reduced Dedicated Server max search ping to 150 ms
  • Fixed a common crash

EDIT: A similar patch was applied to Left 4 Dead 2. The only noted additional patches to L4D2 were:

  • Update Russian subtitles
  • Fixed not being able to interlink teams in team-on-team mode
  • Fixed not being able to properly migrate team lobby after team leader would leave the lobby
  • Fixed not being able to invite friends if player was not team leader in a team-on-team game

Performance Tracker & Third-Person

December 2nd, 2009

Today, we’re going to be talking about a couple useful (and legal) config hacks that you can use to improve both Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2. If you’ve never done this before, this is a great time to learn. The only tool you need for this is a text editor. Notepad will work fine, but we recommend Notepad++.

First, open up your config folder. By default, it’s C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\left 4 dead 2\left4dead2\cfg\ (or remove the ‘2′ for L4D1).

To get a feel for how the config files work, you may wish to find config.cfg and open it with your text editor. If it asks what program you wish to use, just choose Notepad or Notepad++ from the list. This file includes all your keybindings and user settings. Each line stores a separate console command. Essentially, the game reads these files, one line at a time, and puts them through the console (what you open up when you press ~ in-game).

Now, let’s get hacking.

The Performance Tracker

The first hack we’re going to talk about is the performance tracker. This useful tool overlays performance information over your team status UI. Take a look below.

We’re going to be editing a file called autoexec.cfg. The autoexec file is automatically executed when you start the game. If you’ve never created or downloaded an autoexec file, you can start off by downloading the one below and putting it into that cfg folder. If you already have one, tack this onto the end of the existing one.

?Download autoexec.cfg
1
2
3
bind "TAB" "+sb";
alias "+sb" "+showscores; net1; net_graph 5";
alias "-sb" "-showscores; net0; net_graph 0";

All this simple script does is tack on the command “sb” onto the TAB button. As long as you keep the TAB button held down, the overlay will show up, simple as that!

Fixing Thirdpersonshoulder

You may have heard of a non-cheat console command, thirdpersonshoulder, that allows you to play the game in third-person. This is great for melee weapons, especially the chainsaw, since your view will be wider and blood-free, but with the default settings, you’ll find that your gun aims way to the right. To fix this, we apply a few simple commands:

1
2
3
4
5
c_thirdpersonshoulderoffset 0;
c_thirdpersonshoulderaimdist 720;
c_thirdpersonshoulderheight 10;
cam_ideallag 0;
bind "p" thirdpersonshoulder;

The last line is optional. It binds the P button to toggle the third person view.

To get this script to work, you can do one of two things. One, you can copy it onto the end of your autoexec.cfg file. Two, you can create a new .cfg file, which we will call thirdperson.cfg, and place it in the config folder. The game won’t know to run it automatically, though, so you can then add this line to your autoexec file:

1
exec thirdperson;

The exec command tells the game to execute the config file whose filename follows it. Note that you could also type this into the game console (~) while playing to activate it.

More Configs

If you’re interested in more cool config tweaks, we suggest taking a look at the L4D Community Autoexec.

Left 4 Dead Scavenge Mode

November 22nd, 2009

You heard me right. Not Left 4 Dead 2 Scavenge Mode, but Scavenge for the original game! Impossible9 at FPSBanana has come up with a prefab kit so modders to make Scavenge Mode maps for L4D1. Unfortunately, at the moment, we haven’t been able to find an actual map you can download to try it, but it seems that the modified Scavenge Mode has as many features of the new game’s mode as you could expect from the original game engine.

Of course, the boycotters (or, should I say, “boycotters”) are all over this, touting it as proof that Valve didn’t need to make a new game. Whatever you think, it’s an example of the direction that the community will probably take in the next few months as they port more and more content between the two games in an effort to bridge the gap themselves.

Left 4 Dead Maps In L4D2?

November 22nd, 2009

According to some folks in the L4DMods forums, some community developers have found a way to port the Left 4 Dead 1 campaigns (including Crash Course) to L4D2! Including the maps (and perhaps Survivors) from Left 4 Dead 1 was one of the possibilities that players were most excited to hear from Valve, but so far, we haven’t heard anything official about this possibility since about a week after E3.

For those who are excited at the possibility of integration between the two games, this is as good as you’re going to get for now. The modification allows you to play as the new Survivors in the old maps, with the new Infected. However, there are still a number of bugs. For instance, the baseball bat is the only new weapon that can spawn, though the tonfa and Bile bomb are dropped by UCI. Also, players have been complaining about a lot of lag and crashes, especially in crescendos and finales. Most of the finales will crash before completion.

In order to use this mod legally, you have to own both L4D and L4D2 on the PC. You should also have some experience modding your game files, and should create a full backup before proceeding. Otherwise, enjoy!

Left 4 Dead (Un)Holiday Cards

November 13th, 2009

We just spotted some novelties in the Steam Store—namely, Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 holiday greeting cards! These cards were designed by Alexandria Neonakis for Valve, and they feature the Special Infected in various holiday poses.

Yes, you heard me right! Now, you can serve up holiday cheer with a nice helping of slimy bile and corrosive acid. With these cards, you can express your true feelings—feelings like:

“All I want for Christmas is L4D2!”

“I am a Boomer too, pa rum pum pum pum!”

“The Jews didn’t boycott Jesus’ birthday, you know.”

What could be better than that? Get your Left 4 Dead greeting cards today, and have a merry zombocalypse!

Community Maps on Xbox 360?

September 10th, 2009

According to an interview with Valve developer Yasser Mailaka, Valve is looking into ways to bring custom content to Xbox 360 players. The custom content, which is crafted in Left 4 Dead’s SDK, is currently only available for PC players.

Mailaka identified integration with Microsoft’s distribution system and finding a way to filter out copyrighted content to be primary hurdles in the way of the potential offering.

Even More About “Crash Course”

August 18th, 2009

Destructoid recently visited Valve to check out more about the upcoming DLC for Left 4 Dead, Crash Course. The preview includes a large number of spoilers, so I won’t include a synopsis here, but if you want to read the juicy, hot-off-the-compiler info, you should surf on over there and have a look.

The Destructoid staff was definitely impressed with the campaign, particularly with how well-suited it was to Versus play. Hunter connoisseurs will be happy to know that there are plenty of death-defying drops and curve-worthy building facades to play around on. As mentioned previously, there will be some sort of artillery that is used to clear the way during the crescendo of the first chapter. The second chapter crescendo sounds even more exciting, but we’d like to give you a chance to experience its thrills first-hand.

Destructoid also gave us a look at the poster art. Apparently, Zoey has improved from Guy Fawkes to be a bit of a Angelina Jolie-Uma Thurman hybrid.

Thanks to GunRabbit for the link.

Left 4 Dead DLC: “Crash Course”

August 4th, 2009

Steam News has just announced that a new DLC, named “Crash Course”, will be available in September. The DLC will include content set between the events of No Mercy and Death Toll, with particular aspects aimed at creating the option for a more compact Versus experience. The DLC will include Survival maps, a co-op campaign, and new dialogue, as well. We’re expecting the first forum trolls to declare that this is a superficial attempt to quell the L4D2 boycott any minute now! Stay tuned.

Crash Course Campaign Due in September

August 4, 2009 – Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life, Portal, Team Fortress, and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced the next major downloadable content (DLC) update for its co-operative zombie thriller, Left 4 Dead (L4D), the #1 new game title on Xbox 360 and PC in 2008

Entitled “Crash Course,” the latest DLC delivers new single-player, multiplayer and co-operative gameplay to both platforms. Targeted for release in September, “Crash Course” bridges the gap between the end of the “No Mercy” campaign and the beginning of “Death Toll” in the original game, expanding the game universe with new locations, new dialogue from the original cast, and an explosive finale

While containing both Survival maps and a Co-operative Campaign, the primary goal of “Crash” is to deliver a complete Versus mode experience in just 30 minutes, resulting in a streamlined version of the game’s existing Versus campaigns. A recharge timer for infected teammates has also been added, and item spawn behavior has changed for more balanced gameplay.

“Since the release of Left 4 Dead last November, the design team has been excited about creating new experiences for this world and allowing players to do the same, by releasing much of our internal toolset, like the Survival Pack and Authoring Tools,” said Gabe Newell. “We’re working with the fans toward the ongoing entertainment value of the product.”

Left 4 Dead is an action horror game from Valve that blends the social entertainment experience of multiplayer games such as Counter-Strike and Team Fortress with the dramatic, narrative experience made popular in single player action game classics such as the Half-Life series of games. Released in November of 2008, L4D has earned over 50 industry awards from outlets around the world and sold almost 3 million copies worldwide.

Left 4 Dead: Crash Course is targeted for release in September and will be available free of charge on the PC and for 560 Gamer points on Xbox Live.
