Dead Center Finale = Scavenge
As predicted, the Dead Center finale involves finding gas cans to fuel the Plymouth Superbird found in the mall in a similar manner to Scavenge Mode. Recently released gameplay pictures reveal that Survivors must fuel the car with 13 gas cans scattered around the food court of the Liberty Mall. The Superbird purportedly belonged to Jimmy Gibbs, Jr, a famous auto racer with four “Super Cup” wins.
Savannah seems to be infatuated with the racer, since his mug can be seen everywhere from the mall food court to roadside billboards. A mall map reveals that the Survivors start on the opposite side of the mall from the car and make their way inside, which isn’t too surprising.
At one point in the campaign, Survivors must deliver soda to the owner of Whitaker’s Gun Shop before he will open the door. We’re not sure what will attract the horde in this case. Perhaps an evanescent whiff of effervescent indulgence?
We’ve noticed three other things from these gameplay shots: first, one of the crescendos involves opening the door to a “Save 4 Less”, which probably triggers an alarm.
Second, it’s very likely that the CEDA hazmat suit UCI have been moved to DC, based on the large amount of CEDA equipment lying about.
Thirdly, ammo packs will almost definitely be deployable as caches for special ammo types. Here, Ellis is carrying an ammo pack with explosive ammo.
EDIT: These images have been removed from their original site. I’m adding a gallery:
Thanks to HTML_Earth and LiarCake for the heads-ups!

Actually, if looking closely, you can see that the corpse directly under the crosshair in the CEDA Screenshot is a green-coloured Hazmat Infected. This proves that they are in Dead Center.
@Sybilz n Bitz
Good eyes!
if u look closely @ the cola screenshot, there is a bar beside the melee weapon. what’s that? does that mean melee finally get worn out? i’m thrilled.
@sandwich
In that screenshot, he’s carrying a chainsaw, which has a limited amount of fuel, so it will run out over time. However, other melee weapons do not degrade.
@Elunah
Thank you kindly.
I’m actially rather interested in how a Scavenge finale will work in regards to Tank spawns and such… perhaps every six cans?
Guess we’ll have to wait and see. I’m so~o excited. : >
Oh, thank god you saved those screenshots. Their existence has been wiped clean from both the original website they were uploaded on AND the L4D2 forums.
Now, as far as speculation on the soda goes, I found the following on the Left 4 Dead wikipedia page:
“An insane gun shop owner in Left 4 Dead 2’s Dead Center campaign. In The Streets the survivors come across a gun shop in front of the Liberty Mall. The entrance to the shop is locked and the only key in is in the hands of the crazy owner. The owner won’t give you the keys unless you bring him a pack of cola from a nearby conveniance store. To enter the convieniance store, an automatic door must be opened, alerting the horde. Then you’ll have to carry a pack of cola from the store to the gun shop. Once he obtains the cola, the gun shop owner will open the entrace, giving the player acsess to every gun in-game. This is the only cresendo event that can be avoided.”
This raises the obvious question, “Will you interact directly with this shop owner?” I forget who said it, but I’m fairly sure human against human violence was confirmed NOT to appear in this game.
Further, one might query about the ‘carrier’ dilemma in Left 4 Dead 2. Are the survivors indeed carrying the virus around with them? And in highly likely the case that they are, will the gunshop owner end up infected like the Church Guy?
Of course, there is no official source for this passage. I’ll look into it a bit more.
Oh, one other thing I forgot to mention. If you’re looking for proof that the ammo packs can be deployed as caches, watch the Survival Mode walkthrough Abbie did for Xplay–you see them being used in the video despite the fact that she fails to acknowledge them.
@Sybilz n Bitz
No idea yet. We’ll find out soon!
@LiarCake
Wow, I’m glad I saved them now, as well! I’ll make a gallery here for them. I saw that wiki entry, too. It sounds plausible enough.
Chet is the one who said there will be no human-human conflict. He said it right after the release at E3, when he was talking to someone from RPS.
@Elunah
Delivering soda doesn’t sound so life threatening to me.
@Decker
I dunno. Have you ever heard of that Japanese soda that has hydrogen dissolved in it so karaoke singers’ voices can reach higher pitches? Think Hindenberg-in-a-bottle.
If, you look in the picture where Ellis is holding explosive ammo. I am pretty sure thats a hazmat UCI dead body in the pile of zombies to the right.
Deliver cola? What’s gunna trigger off what there? Confusion is amongst me
So… this is supposed to be taking place in Savannah, correct? When I see screen shots (and play the demo) for The Parish, I can tell instantly that I am in N.O. It has a very unique look and feel about it and Valve tried to achieve that same look in the game. The French Quarter looks like the French Quarter. What little has come out about Dead Center makes me fear that all Valve did here was make anysmalltown, USA and call it Savannah. I recall an interview shortly after the game was announced where Chet was talking about how beautiful the homes of Savannah are and then said “but we didn’t go there with the game.” I will be disappointed if Savannah here is like ‘Philly’ was in the first one (wouldn’t have ever guessed Philly had the game’s creators not said that is where it took place)
@Eric
You’re absolutely right!
@Marshazzle
I think opening the door to the Save 4 Less will trigger an alarm system that attracts the horde.
@Parrish
Yes, it’s supposed to be in Savannah. From what I’ve seen, it seems like Dead Center has much more of an Anytown compared to Valve’s New Orleans, which is spot-on. While this may be a shortcoming for the campaign design, I think that there’s a difference in the basic gameplay between the two campaigns. The Parish is almost all outdoors, so the unique architectural feel is important. However, I think DCR is built on unique interior design–malls and hotels and that kind of thing. Anyway, I guess we’ll see how it plays.
Im hoping that the mall wont be boring, what i mean is that there will be plenty of stores and stuff to search for supplie’s, instead of a mall that is just started to be constructed.
@Patriarch VS Tank
I’m hoping the same thing. It’d be cool to fight in stores and see things get smashed about while the zombies are rampaging.
@Elunah
It looks allot like dead rising to be honest O_o, theres a crazed gunowner, except you dont have to kill him, just help him. The mall looks like dead rising’s kind of design… and the town looks similiar too. (Be playing dead rising with RAGDOLL’s!)
